Manton Reid, 85, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas following an accident while working cows.
Born in Oplin, Texas on July 19, 1928, he was the son of Lela (Armor) and Walter Reid. He married Ida Pearl Lilly on February 17, 1956 at her family home in Shep, Texas. He first worked for Burton Lingo Lumber Yard in Lawn, then in Tuscola until it closed. He then worked for Abilene Reporter-News until retiring after 25 years. All of his life he was a farmer and rancher in South Taylor County.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Edith Harrison Miller; and brother, Gerald Reid.
Manton is survived by his wife, Ida Reid of Lawn, Texas; three daughters, Sherry Reid Carroll and husband Ron of Flower Mound, TX, Vonnie Reid Nealon and husband Michael of Center Point, TX, and Janna Reid Best and husband Randy of Lawn; seven grandchildren, Lacey Griffith, Kayla Yates and husband Chris, Manton Joe Best, Alan Howard and wife Amy, Valerie Fulmer and husband Chris, Heather Reyes and Brenden Nealon; and eleven great-grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers, Walter Lawrence Reid and companion Wilma (Sissy) Saunders of Silver Valley, TX, and Max Clemis (Tex) Reid of Lawn; a sister-in-law, Lenora Reid of Lawn; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a large extended family, as well as a bunch of hungry cows.
Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the pavilion in Dewey Cemetery with Paige Baize and Marcy Grun officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Pallbearers will be Ron Carroll, Randy Best, Michael Nealon, Alan Howard, Manton Best, J.D. Willis, Mark Griffith, Donnie Griffith and Roger Coxe. Honorary pallbearers will be Vaughn O’Shields, Lowell Johnson, Evert Claire, E.J. Morgan, Bartis Knight and Winona Brewer.
