Major Charlton Glenn Proctor, Sr., 96, passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2019.

Visitation will be Friday, January 18, 2019 from 7 – 9 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 19, 2019, at The Salvation Army Chapel, 1726 Butternut. Major Eddie Alonzo and Major James Parrish will be officiating. Burial will be Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 2 pm at Restland Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home.

Glenn was born in Brunswick, Georgia to Ralph and Retta Proctor on August 9, 1922. Later Glenn moved with his family to Charlotte, N.C., where he graduated from high school. While selling newspapers on the street corner downtown, Glenn noticed The Salvation Army open air (street) meeting and this pretty girl, named Renee, playing her horn on the corner. He courted her for 6 years, and they married on September 4, 1943. They enjoyed 65 great years of marriage, before Renee’s passing on March 14, 2009.

In 1943, feeling the need to serve his country during WWII, he volunteered for the United States Navy. After basic training, he was assigned to the Naval Destroyer, the USS Moale. Training as a radio operator on the ship, he became a 2nd class radioman, excelling in Morse Code translation. In 1945, after serving 16 months in the Pacific, the war was ending. He had a little time left on his enlistment and was assigned to the military base in Auburn, Alabama to teach a class in Morse Code. He always said he knew Morse Code like the back of his hand and loved teaching his fellow soldiers. He was honorably discharged later that year.  He was one of the few men left from the Greatest Generation and was honored to serve his country.

Glenn attended a Community Bible College for two years in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, he and Renee felt a call from God for full time ministry in The Salvation Army. They entered The Salvation Army School for Officers Training in Atlanta, Georgia and were commissioned as 2nd Lieutenants on May 29, 1949. They served God thru The Salvation Army for 38 years. Their first appointment was to Columbia, SC. Glenn and Renee also served appointments in Miami and Lakeland, Florida, Spartanburg, SC, Dallas, Texarkana, six wonderful years in Abilene, Tyler, Dallas Oak Cliff, and Odessa, Texas. After serving 38 years in the Lord’s work, Glenn and Renee retired from active service in The Salvation Army from Odessa in August of 1987. They retired in Abilene and continued to volunteer their time and talents at The Salvation Army. Glenn started an “encouragement card ministry”, sending cards to many people who experienced sickness or death of a loved one. One of his favorite things to do was teach his Adult Bible Class every Sunday morning. Prior to Renee’s death in 2009, they celebrated 65 years of marriage at the Ball ranch in September of 2008 with family and friends. Glenn remained in their retirement home until 2017. At that time, he needed additional care and moved to Mesa Springs Healthcare Center. He resided there until his death on January 10, 2019.

While active in his appointments, Glenn was involved in the Rotary Club, the Lions Club and the Ministerial Alliance.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Retta Proctor, his wife Major Renee Proctor (2009), his sister, Genie P. Hollingsworth, and his son, Major Dan Proctor (2018).

Glenn is survived by his children, Glenn Proctor, Jr. (Deborah), of Grand Prairie, Major Patricia Earp (Major Carl) of Frisco, daughter-in-law, Major Francina Proctor of Tampa, Florida, Ernest Proctor (Nancy) of Abilene, Carolyn Kennedy and fiancé Bill Linn of Lindale, Texas, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, and many friends.

A special thanks to his longtime physician, Dr. Toby Williams, Mesa Springs Healthcare Center and Hendrick Hospice Care for the excellent care provided.
