Earnest Henderson (Mac) Andrews died Friday, February 13, 2015 at his home near Abilene.
Born on January 11, 1929 in Borger, Texas, Mac graduated from high school in 1946 - the same year he volunteered for service in the US Army. After training in Ft. Lee, Virginia, Mac spent eighteen months with the General Advocates Department keeping records for the Far East Command in Japan under General Douglas MacArthur.
Back in Borger after release from the Army, Mac graduated with the first class of Frank Phillips Junior College. He transferred to Texas Tech where he earned a degree in Business. While attending Tech he worked as the business manager of the Toreador – the college newspaper, and worked part-time for GE Supply.
After graduating from Texas Tech, Mac began to work full time for GE Supply. In June of 1952 he married Marjorie Stockton, whom he had met at a school dance in 1951. Mac and Marjorie made their first home in Abilene. In 1955, while operating TV Radiolab in San Angelo, Mac and Marjorie decided to return to Abilene to open Mac Andrews Appliances at 1441 South First Street. Furniture was soon added to the mix of of merchandise, and Mac gradually expanded by purchasing additional buildings.
Not content to own and operate just one business, Mac formed a partnership that became Rocket Oldsmobile. Mac’s vision, drive, and hard work took him in many entrepreneurial directions and provided opportunities for travel which he shared with his family. Mac credited his wife as well as his many fine advisors and employees for making these dreams possible.
Mac is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie, his son Dick Andrews and wife Leslie, daughter Marianne Wood and husband, Larry, and daughter Jane Hutchens and husband, Kenneth. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew Andrews (wife Vanessa), Scott Andrews, Laurie Wood (fiancé Cale Weatherly), Peter Wood (wife Xi), Shelby Hutchens and Peyton Hutchens. Mac helped welcome great-granddaughter Coralee Dacey Andrews to his family in 2014.
Pallbearers will be Mac’s grandsons: Matthew Andrews, Scott Andrews, Peter Wood and Shelby Hutchens as well as James Graves, Dwayne Hargesheimer, Gilbert Korman, and Allen Wright. Honorary pallbearers include Wynant Wilson, Delbert Allred, Jerry Herttenberger, Jesse Vasquez, Hoss Allen, Bob O’Neal, and Dick Lemons.
The family wishes to express heartfelt love for Mac's caregiver, Laura Joy, and to thank the staff Hospice of the Big Country for always demonstrating the kindest of care.
Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 15th, in the parlor of First Central Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 16th at the Church.
