Dr. Luther A. Marsh, 80, died Friday, September 15, 2006 in a local care facility. A funeral service, with Dr. Eddie Sharp officiating, will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 18 in the University Church of Christ Chapel. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. There will be a visitation from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 17 at the Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Lebanon, Tennessee, Dr. Marsh was the son of William Wallace Marsh and Grace Jones Marsh. He attended schools in Tennessee and Texas, and graduated from Conroe High School, where he was salutatorian of the class of 1943.
He enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1944 to 1946. He completed his undergraduate degree from ACU in 1948. In 1950, he married Jean Crawford. They both taught in public schools, first at Burnet and then at Amarillo.
He pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of Texas, earning a master's degree in 1953 and his doctorate in 1975. Dr. Marsh was employed for 35 years at ACU, where he served in various faculty and staff positions, including professor of psychology and director of testing. He also served the West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene as the part-time chief of psychological services from 1971 to 1983. He was a deacon of the University Church of Christ for more than 45 years.
Dr. Marsh is survived by two daughters, Laura Flippin of League City, Texas and Deborah Carls of Bakersfield, California; two brothers, Albert of Reno, Nevada and Ray of Abilene; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, in 2000 and a daughter, Nina in 1969.
