Lula Lucine (Cox) Smith
Lula Lucine (Cox) Smith, 92, of Abilene, TX, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 1, 2013.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 6 at University Church of Christ, 733 E.N. 16th St., with former State Congressman Bob Hunter and Abilene Mayor Norm Archibald officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Lula was born in Hollis, OK, to Frank Lucius Cox and Jo Gretchen (Jarnigan) Cox. During her early years, the family lived in Mineral Wells, Fort Worth, Sweetwater, Beaumont, and Austin, TX. She married Lawrence L. Smith on May 31, 1941 in the home of her parents in Austin, TX. She attended The University of Texas at Austin and Abilene Christian College. Lula worked in the libraries of Abilene Christian Schools and Abilene Christian University, and worked as a secretary in the ACU Home Economics Department until her retirement. She played violin in the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra for almost 20 years, in the San Angelo Philharmonic Orchestra for 10 years, and sang with the Hillcrest (Church of Christ) Singers. On the occasion of her 90th birthday, Major Norm Archibald declared December 17, 2010, as “Lula Smith Day” in Abilene.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Frank L. Cox, a sister, Jo Mitchell, a brother, Dr. Paul Cox, her husband of 39 years, Lawrence L. Smith, a son, Dallas Frank Smith, and a daughter, Lee Ann Phipps.
She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Jo Katherine Bagley of Fort Worth, TX, and Sharon Miller of Abilene, two sons, Larry Smith and his wife Stephanie of Abilene, Paul Smith and his wife Teresa of San Antonio, a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Smith of Houston; a sister, Wanda Mae Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Doug Smith, M.D., Andrea Ortiz , Lonnie Smith, Rachel Smith, Andy Smith, Jo Katherine Fatzinger, Brett Phipps, Lindsi Goettch, Matt Smith, Drew Smith, Steven Miller and Drew Miller; and two great granddaughters, Kindil Ortiz and Simone Smith.
Pallbearers will be: Larry Smith, Paul Smith, Mike Phipps, Terrill Perkins, Lonnie Smith, Andy Smith, Brett Phipps, Matt Smith, Drew Smith, Steven Miller and Drew Miller.
