Loyd Wendell Mathis, 90, of Abilene, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday, February 5, 2023.
Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, February 10, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, February 11 in the chapel at Hillcrest Church of Christ, with Gary Varner officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wendell’s name to Hillcrest Church of Christ or donor’s favorite charity.
Wendell was born May 21, 1932, in Abilene, TX to Loyd and Cecil Mathis. Wendell married Shirley Pearl Arnold on April 2, 1954. He was a proud graduate of Abilene Christian College. He began his career with Smith, Mathis and Wolfe, a local CPA firm. He went on to become vice-president at Pride Refining, Inc. He retired at the age of 48.
He was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ for over 60 years.
Wendell’s main hobby was restoration of classic antique cars, receiving numerous awards for his achievements, which are too many to list.
He was involved in many philanthropy endeavors, Abilene Christian University and Hillcrest Church of Christ were at the top of the list.
Wendell served on numerous boards, supporting the growth and development of Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his father Loyd and mother Cecil, as well as his wife Shirley. Wendell is survived by his sons, Craig and Steve, his daughter Kay, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Dylan Mathis, Vincent Garcia, and Jason Mathis, as well as friends: Bruce Bailey, Brad McCoy and Dale Morris.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Broyles and Rocky Brooks.
The family would like to offer special thanks to Joanne Mathis RN, and Hospice of the Big Country, Gary Holland MD, Deborah RN, Sherry RN, and Carmen HHA. These folks were truly a blessing to Wendell and the Mathis family and will be held closely in their hearts for the loving care and support provided to Wendell and his family.
