Louise Katherine Novak Turner, 85, passed away on February 27, 2007. A graveside service will be held at the Oakes Cemetery in Limestone County, Texas, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Services are scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2007. Officiating will be Rev. Bud Kidwell of First United Methodist Church, Quanah, Texas and Rev. Charles Anderson of University United Methodist Church, San Antonio, Texas. A memorial and celebration of Louise's life will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Quanah at a later date.
Louise was born in Canadian County, Oklahoma on January 13, 1922. She was a graduate of Spearman High School in Spearman, Texas and graduated from West Texas State University (now West Texas A & M University) with a BS in Home Economics. Louise taught home economics for 23 years at Quanah High School.
In December 1943, she married Garland C. Turner. The couple moved to Quanah, Texas in 1951 and were long time residents of that city. She was very active in the Quanah First United Methodist Church and in her community. In 1991, the location of their family owned farm supply business in Quanah became the Turner Family Center which housed the Head Start Program for Hardeman County.
Mrs. Turner has served a member and officer of various organizations over the years; president of Travis PTA, president of the Hardeman County Classroom Teacher, president of Delta Kappa Gamma, president of Hardeman County Retired School Personnel, treasurer for the United Methodist Women, secretary of Fellowship Sunday School Class, and member of the Methodist Administrative Board. She served as secretary of the Hardeman County Child Welfare Board and volunteered at the Hardeman County Museum and Historical Society. In 1981 she was awarded the Quanah Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award and in 1999 was named the Woman of the Year by the Quanah Chamber of Commerce.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, former Hardeman County Judge Garland C. Turner, her son, James W. Turner of Austin, Texas, and her brother Robert Novak of Spearman, Texas.
Survivors include her son, Lloyd Garland Turner and his wife, Karen, of Abilene, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Martine Turner of Austin; her four grandchildren: Susan Coleman and her husband Jarrett Coleman; Ryan Kellus Turner and his wife, Stephanie; Andrew Garland Turner, and Matthew Novak Turner; three great-grandsons: Brett Turner Coleman, Bradley Pearce Coleman and William James Turner. She also leaves her friend and care companion Leta Marsh.
Pallbearers will be: Tom Turner, Bill Turner, Don Turner, Ken Turner, Kent Turner, Cliff David, and Jeff Sheets.
