Lessie Garvin, 98, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at an Abilene nursing center.
Lessie was born on January 29, 1911, in Parker County, Texas to the late Thomas Marion and Ora Jane (Dodson) Blackerby. She moved to Jones County as a teenager and married Leon Robert Garvin in Anson, Texas on January 17, 1931. They later moved to Lueders, Texas. Lessie was a member of the First Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher for 45 years. She moved next to her daughter at Potosi, Texas in 1988, and for the last five years lived with her south of Abilene.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leon Robert Garvin; son, Carrol Garvin; grandson, Clayton Garvin; great-grandson, Isaiah Alexander Murray; four brothers, Ira Blackerby, Kyle Blackerby, Clarence Blackerby and Lester Blackerby; and three sisters, Laura Stough, Clemmie Garvin and Connie Graves.
Survivors include her children, Fred Garvin and wife, Arleen, of Clyde, Thomas Garvin and wife, Jo Evelyn, of Cisco, Robbie Cason and husband, Clyde, of Ventura, California, Harry Garvin and wife, Doris Evelyn, of Cisco, Rex Garvin and wife, Nan, of McKinney, Leon Robert Garvin, Jr. and wife, Sue, of Princeton, West Virginia, Rose Krupa and husband, Kirby, of Abilene and Beccy Garvin of Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter-in-law, Jeanie Garvin of Anson; 25 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Potosi Baptist Church with Rev. Harry Garvin and Rev. Donny Harbers officiating. Interment will follow in Potosi Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Lessie Garvin was a great prayer warrior for her family, friends and church. She loved her Lord Jesus, her family and friends, and her church. She ministered to numerous people through a phone ministry and mailing cards and letters, as well as in person. She was never bashful or embarrassed about proclaiming the love of Jesus Christ.
