Leroy "Pete" Norman, 87, of Abilene, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006 at a local hospital. The family will be staying at 3902 Inverrary. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22 at Highland Church of Christ with Lynn Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Pete was born on June 21, 1918 in Guthrie, Oklahoma to Guy and Charity (Garrison) Norman. Pete joined the Army on October 9, 1939. August 2, 1942 he married Faye Jolene Varner in Abilene. Pete served in the United States Army in Germany during WWII, under General Patton. He moved to Abilene after the war and worked for a short period of time for the Chevrolet dealership. He then became the shop foreman for the OMS (Organization Maintenance Shop) under the direction of the Texas National Guard, first working at Camp Barkley and then later for the OMS in Abilene. Pete retired on July 1, 1979, from Civil Service and the Texas National Guard after committing 36 years of service. After retiring, he became a member of the Good Sam's Travel Club, Rainbow Travelers and the Pantry Ministry at Highland Church of Christ. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ since 1946 and a longtime elder. Pete served as a board member for the Abilene Food Bank, Noah Project, Christian Homes and President of Good Sam's Club. Pete was preceded in death by both of his parents, two sisters, Marie Polwort and Dee Spaulding, and one brother, Johnny Norman. He survived by his wife, Faye Norman of Abilene; two sons, Lelon J. Norman and his wife Susan of Milsap, Texas, and Gary Norman of Abilene; one brother Tommy Norman of Oklahoma; three sisters, Betty Halburg of Edin, Oklahoma, Dot Mogabgab of Thibodaux, Louisiana, Toodie Benson and her husband Jack of Colorado Springs, Colorado; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made in honor of Leroy "Pete" Norman, Herald of Truth Ministries, 3444 North 1st, Abilene, TX 79603.
