Rev. Dr. Leo F. Scott, 76, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2009. The Pre-Celebration Service, to include viewing and visitation, will be held at the New Light Baptist Church, 518 North 6th Street, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 1, 2010. The Celebration of Life and Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 12:00 noon, at First Baptist Church, 1333 North 3rd Street, Abilene, Texas, with Rev. Eddie Jordan officiating and Rev. James C. Brown, eulogist. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Rev. Scott was born in Rockdale, Milam County Texas, February 12, 1933, to Robert and Bessie Scott. He was the youngest of ten children.
He retired from the Abilene State School after 28 years, as the Director of Pharmacy.
Rev. Scott was pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Hamlin, Texas for over 14 years, and served as the pastor of The New Light Missionary Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas for 13 years, retiring in 1999; where he served as the Senior Pastor until his demise. He also served as interim pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist church for nineteen months.
Rev. Scott was the first African American to serve on the Abilene City Council, and the first African American pharmacist in Abilene. He served on numerous boards in the Abilene community.
Survivors: Wife, Piney, three daughters, Jarilyn (James) Brown, Regenia (Rudolph) Phillips, Cessilye (Timothy) Williams and one son, Michael (Bizunesh) Scott, and a host of relatives and friends.
He was a member of the Progressive West Texas Baptist Association, where he served as President of Congress, Moderator, Teacher of Ministers and President of Scholarships.
Rev. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.
