Leo Larkin Herndon, 84, died Saturday, September 16, 2006 in Abilene. A memorial service, with Chaplain Rob Mulkey, will be at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Leo was born August 26, 1922 in Anson, Texas to Sam and Beulah Sims Herndon. He grew up in Anson and graduated from Anson High School. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Abilene Christian College, now ACU. On December 18, 1943, he married Cornelia Nan Alamae Black. Leo was a United States Army Air Corp veteran of World War II and served in the Philippines and Australia. He was an employee of Lone Star Gas for 42 years and an active member of the community. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, dancer and gun collector. Leo was a member of the Abilene Founders Lions Club, the Petroleum Club, the Abilene Club and a Dale Carnegie Graduate. As a young man, he was active in the Easter Seals Campaign.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alamae N. Herndon; his parents, Sam and Beulah Herndon; three brothers, two sisters and his two sons Kendall and Patrick Leo Herndon. He is survived by two daughters, Gina Kathryn Bunker and Cynthia "Cindi" Love and life partner Sue Jennings all of Abilene. His sister, Alice Bristow of Houston and sister-in-law, Lila Belle Herndon of Sweetwater and four grandchildren, Russell Larkin Bunker, Christopher Brandon Bunker, Amber "Hannah" Love and partner Melanie Martinez, and Joshua Levi Love and partner Kit Waxweather and a large extended family.
Leo loved people. Always willing to share of himself, tell a good story and make people laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
