Lawrence Lee Evans

1923 — May 15, 2010

Lawrence Lee (Nuett) Evans, 86, of Abilene, died Saturday, May 15, 2010 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 19 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Lawrence was born in Velasco, Texas on December 27, 1923 to Tyler Russell Evans and Amanda Davenport Evans. He was the youngest of four children, two of whom died in early childhood. His mother passed away when he was thirteen and two years later his father became ill with tuberculosis, forcing him to live with several different sets of relatives until he was old enough to join the Navy at the end of WWII. In a surge of patriotism after the sinking of the USS Houston, he and many of Houston's sons joined the Navy to replace the ones lost at sea in that battle. After the Navy he became a barber and moved his family from Kerrville, TX to Abilene in 1955 where he resided until his passing. He was a barber until the Beatles became popular and guys stopped getting haircuts. He then went to work for the Post Office downtown in Abilene, working at the front counter for twenty years, a job he enjoyed very much. After retiring from the post office he went to work again as a part-time barber until he was 85, working at Elmwood West Barber Shop. The love of his life, Lois, passed away August 24, 2004 and every day since he has wanted to join her. For several years he was a part-time preacher, traveling on Sundays to congregations in Brownwood and Ranger who could not afford a full-time minister. He retired from travel when Lois became too ill for him to leave at home. He was a member of Wylie Church of Christ in Abilene, TX at the time of his death. He is survived by one daughter, Brenda Siewert and son-in-law Jerry of Abilene; grandchildren Sean and Margie Siewert of Abilene and Chad and Lauren Siewert of Dallas; great-granddaughters Claire, Kate and Meg Siewert of Abilene and Violet Siewert of Dallas; one step-son, Ercel Ray Warren and daughter-in-law Gay of Abilene, their son Lawrence and daughter Melanie and four great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
