Larry was born to Edsel and Faye Curnutt at the Great Lakes Navy Hospital in Waukegan, Illinois on September 11, 1943. He grew up in a loving faith-based home with both parents being educators. The family moved to Eldorado, Oklahoma and later to Eunice, New Mexico where Larry graduated from Eunice High School. He continued his education in Lubbock where he graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Accounting. While at Tech, Larry met and married Sharon Bingham in 1964. Larry and Sherry had two children, a son, Casey and a daughter, Cris. The family moved to Abilene in 1970 for Larry’s job in sales with Star Engraving and later with Balfour. Larry loved to work outdoors and started his own construction and fencing company that served Abilenians for many years. He believed that success was a result of hard work, perseverance, and passion and his legacy of this strong work ethic can be seen in his children and in his grandchildren.
Larry met his best friend, Donna McDonald in 1992. They enjoyed spending time with friends and family, watching movies, dancing and dining, and traveling together for almost 30 years. Their special bond was evident to all who knew them, especially during Larry’s final years in his courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Larry was an eternal optimist, and he never met a stranger. He enjoyed farming and ranching, hunting, fishing, driving in his truck, and spending time with his family in the great outdoors. Larry was kind and he loved to tell a good story, treasured daily coffee with his friends, loved to dance, was always ready to close a deal, and beamed with pride when he spoke about his children and grandchildren.
Larry was preceded in death by his loving parents, Edsel and Faye Curnutt. He is survived by his close friend, Donna McDonald; son, Casey Curnutt and wife, Mindi; daughter, Cris Curnutt Daskevich and husband, Phillip; sister, Karen Pierce and husband, Bobby; grandchildren, Mackenzie Curnutt Foster, Kyle Curnutt, and Caroline and Dillon Daskevich.
Pallbearers will be David Coleman, Rob Estes, Bobby Gilbreath, Forrest Green, Sha Griffin, Jordan McDonald, Chad Pierce, Dwayne Sloan, Kent Strain and Robert Wagstaff.
The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude for Larry’s amazing and dedicated caregiver, Dianne Martin. She provided years of joy and support to Larry and his family and allowed Larry to live his fullest life. They would also like to recognize and thank Larry’s extraordinary hospice team who accompanied him throughout his journey with dignity, grace, and love. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Hendrick Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, or to a charity of your choice.
