Lana Sue Cunningham, RN, BSN, MSN, FNP-C, age 71, of Abilene Texas, passed away Monday October 21, 2019 in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be Wednesday October 23 from 6-8 PM at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday October 24, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas, located at 1333 North 3rd Street with The Reverend C.V. Blake of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Lana Sue Cunningham was born in Sherman, Texas to Edsel and Ruby Cary on January 24 1948. She went to Sherman High School and graduated from The University of Texas in Arlington with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She spent the majority of her early career as a school nurse and hospice nurse before becoming the Director of Nursing for Hendrick Hospice Care. She received her Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Abilene Christian University and received her FNP-C from ACU as well and went on to practice in oncology and endocrinology. Lana married Tom Cunningham on June 2, 1966 in Sherman, Texas. She loved spending her time traveling, cooking, and loving her grandchildren and watching them play in all their activities. Cooking with Bonnie Turney was one of her favorite things to do.
Lana Sue Cunningham was preceded in death by her father Edsel Cary, and mother Ruby Cary.
Lana Sue Cunningham is survived by her husband, of 53 years Tom Cunningham of Abilene, Texas; son, Scott Cunningham and wife Cynthia; grandchildren, Ty, Dara, and Marcus of Grand Prairie, Texas; son, Steven Cunningham and wife Shanie; grandchildren, McKenzie and Peyton all of Abilene, Texas; sister in law, Janna Taylor; bother in laws, Jerry Cunningham and wife Debbie, Randy Cunningham and wife Joey and many nieces and nephews. Lana was an only child but is also survived by her best friend who is like a sister, Bonnie Turney and husband Benny. They have been best friends for 47 years.
Pallbearers will be Benny Turney, Dr. James Brooks, Dr. Fred White, Delbert Alred, Jerry Johnson, Dennis Adams, Shawn Stewart, Dean Turney, and Dr. Victor Hirsch
Memorials may be given to Hendrick Hospice Care. The Cunningham family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Hendrick Hospice Care, First Baptist Church, and all the many friends that helped with care and support of Lana throughout this difficult time.
