L. Glynn Ray

Abilene, Texas – Lloyd Glynn Ray, 86, passed from this earthly life on August 9, 2021, while in the compassionate care of Lyndale Memory Care and Hendrick Hospice Care.

A Celebration of Glynn’s Life is scheduled for Saturday, August 14, at 2 pm, in the Chapel of Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd., Abilene. Officiating the service will be a special family friend, Chuck Rodgers. The family will receive friends in the Chapel immediately following the service.

Serving as Honorary Pallbearers are long-time friends Larry Hall, Hobby Stevens, Zane Travis, MD, John Coombs, Mitch Hall, and Bryant Manning, MD.

Glynn was born June 3, 1935, in Tyler, Texas, the youngest of four siblings, to parents Gordon Alvis Ray and Margie Val Jeane Parson Ray. After graduation from Pecos High School in 1951 at age 16, Glynn enrolled at the University of Texas, Austin. At age 19, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a minor in History, in 1954. While Glynn waited to be old enough to sit for his CPA exam, Glynn met the first love of his life, Betty Marie Holmes. They married June of 1956.

Also in 1956, Glynn joined the Abilene, Texas-based accounting firm of H.B. Oliver as a Certified Public Accountant, becoming a partner that same year. In 1957, Oliver & Ray merged with Condley, Morphew & Co., CPA. In 1966, Glynn opened a new accountancy firm, L. Glynn Ray, CPA, while simultaneously reading law under attorney David L. Hooper. After passing the Texas State Bar in 1970, services were expanded, and Glynn’s firm was subsequently renamed Ray & Company. Glynn worked in the world of numbers and details for almost sixty years until his retirement in 2011.

While rearing their three daughters, Glynn and Betty were actively involved in supporting the community of Abilene, and Texas, through volunteer service. Glynn served on the boards of the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, including two terms as president; as a founding member of Hospice of Abilene; First Baptist Church; Kiwanis International; the Texas Historical Foundation; the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and the State Bar of Texas.

Glynn was also an avid vegetable and flower gardener, world traveler, and fly-fisherman, particularly in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. His hobbies were fueled by the summer he spent working on a ranch in New Mexico at age 14. That summer experience also led him to write a novel of historical fiction entitled The Man Who Loved North Wind, published in 2015 and sold by Amazon. Glynn dedicated his book to the second love of his life, wife Billye Proctor Shaw, whom he wed in 2008 after 51 years of marriage to Betty. 

Glynn was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Betty, and brothers John Stephen Ray, and Gordon Everett Ray.

Glynn leaves many behind who will cherish their memories of time spent with him: wife Billye Proctor Shaw and her family, daughter Chris Proctor Cleveland of Abilene, Texas, daughter Ava Proctor Munoz and husband Samuel of St. Louis, Missouri, son Brent Proctor and wife Marisol of Ft. Worth, Texas, and son Lance Proctor, MD and wife J’Laine of Laramie, Wyoming; grandchildren Canon Cleveland Cavazos and husband Daniel of Abilene, Texas, Caroline Cleveland of Abilene, Texas, Marissa Munoz Blackwell and husband Wade of St. Louis, Missouri, Stephen Munoz of St. Louis, Missouri, Giana Munoz of Los Angeles, California, Mia Proctor of Ft. Worth, Texas, Miranda Proctor Eschenbrenner and husband Eric of Houston, Texas, Sam Proctor of Dallas, Texas, Dylan Proctor of Washington, DC, Colton Proctor of Glendale, Arizona, Simret Proctor of Laramie, Wyoming, and Makeda Proctor of Laramie, Wyoming; daughter Sheri Lynn Ray Burt of San Antonio, Texas; daughter Karen Marie Ray Fields of Burleson, Texas; and daughter Judith Alane Ray McAnally of Weatherford, Texas; and grandchildren Christina Marie Burt of San Antonio, Texas, Celeste Lyn Burt of San Antonio, Texas; Charles “Chase” Glynn Howard Burt of  Lubbock, Texas, and Leah Beth Bargainer Edwards and husband Adam of Denton, Texas; sister Xandra Ray Cox of Texas; and his beloved furry dog companions Bella and Tiger .

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, or the Texas Historical Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
