Katherine Stewart

1923 — April 13, 2017

Katherine Stewart, 93, of Abilene, Texas, made her long-awaited journey to be with the Lord Thursday, April 13, 2017. The celebration of her life will be at the First Baptist Church Chapel, at 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 17, 2017, officiated by Mike Greenfield of First Baptist Church under the direction The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Katherine was born in Graham, TX to John J. Glover and Jennie Bowles Glover, September 8, 1923. She married George C. Stewart, Jr., DVM in Brady, TX. They were married 69 years. A graduate of Brady High School, she attended Kansas State University. Prior to her marriage, she worked at KRBC as a programmer, announcer, and in other areas. During football season, she could be found with the radio and popcorn cheering for the Abilene High School Eagles after her children graduated. She was an outstanding cook: candies, sourdough bread, pies, not to mention just plain comfort food! She enjoyed square dancing with several clubs in the Abilene area – especially at the Wagon Wheel at Tye, and camping with the Good Sams and other clubs with George. For many years, she enjoyed serving in the kitchen at First Baptist Church on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. She enjoyed volunteering at City Light Community Ministries, West Texas Fair, and Western Heritage Days. Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband George C. Stewart; sons George “Porge” Stewart and John Stewart; and daughter Starla Ruth Stewart Jordan. She is survived by her daughter Angela Lewis and husband Monty of Abilene; grandchildren Michael Lewis and wife Kristen and great-grandchildren Carter and Evyn of Lubbock, Sherri Lewis of Euless, David Lewis and wife Jessica and great-granddaughter Lilly Beth of San Marcos, TX; former daughter-in-law Karel Mercer Stewart and grandchildren John Stewart, Jr. and wife Brooke of Northlake, TX, James Stewart of Northlake, and Mary Katherine “Katie” Stewart of North Richland Hills, TX. Memorials may be given to the Abilene High School Eagle Band, City Light Community Ministry Kitchen renovation of First Baptist Church Abilene, Meals on Wheels Plus, Rescue the Animals, or the charity of your choice. Katherine's daughter wishes to thank outstanding support of Interim Health Care Hospice, Drs. Robert Striegler, Jerry Biddix, Robert Dickey, Nancy Wong, and Summer Walthall for their attentiveness. Also, gratitude goes to the PT's, OT's, and ST's of Encompass Home Health, Wisteria, and Bright Pointe at Lytle Lake, as well as the staffs at the facilities Wisteria Independent, Covenant Place, Silver Spring and Bright Pointe. Thank you to the people of First Baptist Church and other friends who visited, prayed, and sent cards during Katherine's senior years!
