June (Chorn Hinton Price) Dent passed away on May 20, 2017, at Hendricks Memorial
Hospital. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, May 26th at the Hamil Family
Funeral Home and her memorial service will be on Sunday, May 28th at 2:00 PM in the
chapel at First Baptist Church Abilene. A family graveside service will be held on
Saturday May 27th at Elmwood Memorial Park.
June was born in Hermleigh, Texas on July 7, 1926, to W.S. and Ruth Jones Chorn.
She moved to Abilene when she was in the fifth grade and graduated from Abilene High
School, where she was a member of the pep club and the National Honor Society.
While working as a medical transcriptionist at Camp Barkeley during WW II, she met
and married Med Tech Norman E. Hinton of Rocky Mount, N.C. After the war, they
moved to Rocky Mount, where she and Norman raised their two daughters and June
earned her bachelor degree in education.
Following Norman's death in 1966, she and her young daughters moved back to
Abilene. While teaching 5th grade at Crockett Elementary, June earned a master's
degree in counseling from Hardin-Simmons University. Thereafter, she was employed
by the Abilene ISD as one of its first elementary school counselors. She later worked as
a school counselor at Cooper High School and Jefferson Middle School.
While her daughters were in college, she married John R. Price. They enjoyed
traveling, square dancing, volunteering at the Abilene Baptist Association Social Ministry
and FBC City Lights, and socializing with friends at their supper club. They also spent
many happy days with their three grandchildren. June retired from AISD after 22 years.
Upon John's unexpected death, she managed P & L Office Supply, as the sole
proprietor.
In 1996, while volunteering as a counselor with the FBC grief counseling ministry, she
met William (Bill) E. Dent, whom she married in 1997. June and Bill continued to
volunteer at the Abilene Social Ministry and were honored many times for their
dedication to the ministry. They too loved to travel and socialize with friends and family.
They especially loved their Sunday school class at First Baptist Church and their
Sunday night "hamburger" group. Because education was so important to them, June
and Bill established a scholarship at Hardin-Simmons University for education students,
with an emphasis on those majoring in counseling.
June loved the people of First Baptist Church, where she was a member for 51 years.
She also loved reconnecting with former students, who often recognized her in the mall
or a restaurant. She was a woman of great faith, who dearly loved her Lord and her
family, both immediate and extended.
She is survived by her husband William E. Dent, daughter Kay Hinton Brown and
husband Benjamin H. Brown, daughter Judy Hinton Oles and husband Michael P. Oles,
step-daughter Delinda Dent Lackey and husband John Lackey, brother Warren S.
Chorn and wife Jeanine Chorn, and brother Kenneth Chorn. She is also survived by
grandson Ryan Oles and wife Lauren, grandson Russ Oles, granddaughter Melissa
Brown Hodges and husband Travis, step-granddaughter Alisha Wray and husband
Justin, step-granddaughter Katybeth Sharp and husband Andrew, numerous nieces and
nephews, their children, and a large extended family.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Oles, Russ Oles, Travis Hodges, Ken Chorn, Milt Milton, and
Anthony Bennett.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Abilene Baptist
Association Social Ministry and/or the Bill and June Dent Education Scholarship at
Hardin-Simmons University.
