Julius Kubena, 87, passed away January 18, 2006 in Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 21, 2006 at Highland Church of Christ with David Mickey and Bob Branch officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Mr. Kubena was born on June 18, 1918 in Moulton, Texas to Willie and Rosie (Horsak) Kubena. As a young boy Julius and his family moved to Hermleigh, Texas. He graduated from Hermleigh High School in 1937. While in high school he was Senior Class President and Captain and Recruiter for the football team. Julius attended Draughon's Business College in Abilene and was working toward a CPA certificate when he was drafted on February 13, 1941. He was sent to Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas where he served his four years and nine months in Medical Administrative. In December 1945 he was discharged as a Master Sgt. On February 15, 1945, Julius married Lucile Davison, of Sweetwater. In 1946 he went to work in the local office of West Texas Utilities. He retired as District Auditor of District A and B after thirty-seven years of employment. Julius also served in the National Guard from 1947 until retiring as a Major in 1972. While in the National Guard, he served as Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battery, First Rocket-Howitzer Btn. 131st Field Artillery. Mr. Kubena served as Director of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, President of the Key City Kiwanis Club, and as a Deacon at Highland Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Lucile; one daughter, Kim Harrell and her husband Steve of Abilene; one grandson, Tyler Harrell; one granddaughter Holly Harrell; one sister Annie Cochran of Colleyville; one brother, Rudy Kubena of Hermleigh and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill Kubena of McKinney, Terry Kubena of Snyder, Don and Randy Kubena of Hermleigh, Jerry Cochran of Colleyville and Quest Daniel of San Antonio will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. L.G. Hardwicke, Dr. Bill Haynes and R.C. Franke. Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, PO Box 1922, Abilene, Texas, 79604, Highland Church of Christ Christian Ministries, 425 Highland, Abilene, Texas 79605 or the donor's favorite charity.
