Juanita Mae McClure, 81, died Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at a local hospital. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Elliott Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Nita was born on November 4, 1924 in Quitman, Mississippi to Vernon Lee and Mary Lou (Fontaine) Red. She graduated from Texas State College for Women in 1945 with a B.S. Degree as a Registered Dietician. In 1946 she served her dietetic internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was employed by the Dallas Independent School District as a Dietician. She also taught English as a second language to foreign students. September 7, 1946, Juanita married Robert McClure in Denton, Texas. The couple moved to Abilene in February of 1947. She was co-owner of McClure Furniture Company with, her husband, for sixteen years.
Mrs. McClure was a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Twentieth Century Study Club. She was a volunteer for Adult Literacy, the West Texas Rehab and participated in Bible Study Fellowships. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Abilene, where she was a Prayer Works Volunteer.
Nita was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one son, Robert Lee McClure. She is survived by her husband, Robert D. McClure of Abilene, her son Ken Nelson McClure of Austin, Texas and her daughter-in-law, Robin McClure of Huntsville, Texas.
