Juanita M. Brooks

Juanita M. “Granny” Brooks, 77, of Hawley, passed away December 6, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Burtis Williams and Dr. Jeff Iorg will officiate. Burial will follow in the Midway Cemetery in Hodges, Texas. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Juanita was born to Carl W. Minor and Eunice K. Minor in Macon, Georgia on October 22, 1937. She grew up in Macon and graduated from Miller High School there before moving to Abilene in 1961. Juanita married Robert Truman Brooks on May 10, 1978 in Abilene, Texas. She worked for 27 years at Godsey-Evans/Godsey Equipment/Airmaster in Abilene. She was a member of Hodges Baptist Church, Hodges, Texas. Juanita was an avid participant in trail rides, parades, and rodeos. Her team and wagons were often seen in the Albany Fandangle, Frontier Days (Cheyenne, Wyoming), and parades across Texas. She was former secretary of TETRA (Texas State Trail Riders Association) and participated in rides like the West Texas Rehab Ride, Santa Fe Trail Ride, Friendship Wagon Train Ride, the Stillwell Ranch Ride near Big Bend Park, and the Big Country Trail Drivers Ride. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Truman Brooks of Hawley, Texas; six children, Jeff Iorg and wife Ann of Mill Valley, California, James L. “Jim” Iorg, Jr. and wife Laura of Zavalla, Texas, Jeanna Singleton and husband Tom of Hawley, Texas, Jerry Dale Brooks and partner Michael Lawrence of Celina, Texas, Donna Kendrick and partner Loreta Hall, Kyle Kendrick and wife Michelle, all of Merkel; Margie Hood and husband Tim, of Ft. Riley, Kansas; one sister, Henrietta Click of Gulfport, Mississippi; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
