Joyce Lynn Smith

Joyce Lynn Presswood Smith, 74, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, May 11, 2012 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow at 12:00 pm in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. Lynn was born in Abilene, Texas on June 10, 1937. She was a very active member of the 4H and graduated from Abilene High School in 1955. On June 21, 1957 she married Joe Kenneth Smith of Abilene and Paint Creek. During their 54 year marriage they produced four children and lived in numerous different towns in Texas, which included Big Lake, Midland, Graham, Sweetwater and Lovington, New Mexico. Lynn worked various administrative jobs throughout the years but was proudest of working as a time keeper at Lone Star Industries. That was in the 1970's and she earned the same pay as a man, which was a significant accomplishment at that time. She retired in 1987 and they moved to Midland where she took an active role in Master Gardeners. Lynn spent many years transporting her four children to many activities to include rodeos all over the state. As every young cowboy knew, Lynn's door was always open to those traveling from one rodeo to the next. Lynn traveled to Sweetwater football games and took as many kids as would fit in the camper shell of a long bed pick up. She is still well remembered and loved by many in Sweetwater. Lynn was preceded in death by her daughter Christi Leigh Smith; her mother, Reta Pauline Francis; her father, Lloyd Presswood; and her brother, Rex Presswood. She is survived by her husband, Joe Kenneth Smith of Abilene; two sons, Sean Smith and wife Lavinda of Colorado City, Shane Smith and wife Robin of Graham; one daughter, Lesia Crumbley and husband Bryon of Salem, Alabama; her brother, Lloyd Presswood and wife Katy of Abilene; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two nieces. Pallbearers will be Alex Stevens, Jake Stevens, Dilon Duffy, Tobin Smith, Stephen Torrez and Lane Smith. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Ben Richey Boy's Ranch.
