On August 3, 2018, Jon Alan Smith went to be with his precious Savior in Abilene, Texas.
Born in South Carolina, raised in Snyder, TX, and formally of Lubbock, Texas, Jon spent the past 14 years in Abilene, Texas with his beautiful bride and best friend Nadene Smith. Married for 28 years, they built a precious life centered on serving Christ in any and every way. A member of Beltway Park Church, Jon played drums in kid’s church, which was perfect since he was a music fanatic. Jon drummed in several bands throughout his life, and especially loved “The Outlet” Band.
Jon’s work passion was kids and sports, working as Executive Director of Abilene Youth Sports Authority (AYSA), a nonprofit youth sports organization. In every fundraiser, tournament, firm foundation camp, and event, Jon’s main aim was to teach kids and parents the positive impact sports can have in your life as God receives all the glory! Though he loved to play all sports, golf was his favorite.
Jon will be remembered for his humility. Always thoughtful and insightful, his deepest desire was for his life to point people towards Christ. His love for his family was deep, and Jon and his daughter were especially close. Anyone who knows them knew that he was her best friend and biggest advocate. Humor was also an integral part of his life. To know Jon was to know laughter, and you always came away from interactions more joyful than before.
Survivors include Nadene (wife), Tucker Smith (daughter), JD and Donna Smith (parents), John and Pam Erwin (sister and husband), Kelsey and Tag Duce (niece and husband), Charles Williams (uncle), Gary and Diana Handley (in-laws), Dean and Benita Handley (brother-in-law and wife), Christina and Kye Garcia (niece and great-nephew), as well as countless dear friends: for them the family is beyond grateful and truly humbled by their support and love.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 8th, at Beltway Park Church – South Campus: 4009 Beltway, Abilene TX, 79606, officiated by Pastors Randy Turner and John Erwin. A lunch will immediately follow the service. Arrangements are by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
