Johnny Barber, 85, died Thursday, September 20, 2007 in Abilene. Funeral services, with Brother Don Woods officiating, will be at 10:00 am Monday, September 24, 2007 at Bible Chapel, 2549 North Danville Drive. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday in the chapel at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
March 6, 1922, Johnny was born in Tahoka, Texas to Alonzo and Ela (Brown) Barber. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945. Johnny married Mary Kathryn Gotcher in Sweetwater, Texas on January 8, 1949. He moved to Abilene from Sweetwater in 1972. Johnny worked in construction building homes and churches. He was also a cabinet builder. Johnny loved caring for his family and spending time with them at their lake house. He also enjoyed snow skiing with his family. Johnny was a member of Bible Chapel in Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Maldon and Lonnie Barber; three sisters, Jan Bishop, Lillian Nolen, and Mae Taylor; and one grandson, Kyle Huff.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Kathryn Barber, of Abilene; one son, Ted Barber and wife Debra, of Austin; one daughter, Terrye Huff and husband Mike, of Georgia; one granddaughter, Kelly Bolin and husband Joe; two grandsons, Chris and Patrick Huff; and three great-grandchildren, Layne, Landry and Layton Bolin. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Chris Huff, Patrick Huff, Taylor Woods, Joe Bolin, Wayne Gotcher, and Charles Gotcher will serve as pallbearers. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be: Larry Brookreson, W.L. Massey, Shorty Stout, Mark Harper, Glen Hammons and Robert Martin.
