Johnnie Mae Poynor left her earthly home on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. She had been residing at Windcrest Healthcare Center up until her death.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the chapel of First Baptist Church, Abilene. The service will be officiated by Dr. Phil Christopher. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in Eastland City Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 1, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Poynor was born on May 29, 1924 in Eastland, Texas to Henry Murphy and Lois Fissel. She attended and graduated from Eastland High School. She met the love of her life in Eastland and married Wesley Lee Poynor on November 23, 1941.
Mrs. Poynor was a stay-at-home mom except for about a twelve-year span when she worked as a seamstress in Eastland. She was a member of Eastside Baptoist Church until re-locating to Abilene. For a number of years, she was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout mother as well as a Little League volunteer while her sons were involved in both of those activities. She was a long-time member as well as an officer of the Pythian Sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lois Murphy, as well as her husband Wesley.
She is survived by her two sons, Gary and wife Kathy as well as Ken and wife Dolores, all of Abilene. She has four grandchildren – Brian Poynor of Abilene, Adam Poynor of Cedar Park, Carolyn Petrencik and husband Scott of Mansfield, and Matt Poynor and wife Traci of Roanoke. She has eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer Association, or to the City Lights Community Ministries of Abilene.
