John Henry Woods

John Henry Woods, 92, died Thursday, August 12, 2010, at an Abilene medical center. Born in Normangee, Texas on September 21, 1917, John was the son of Carrie (Collins) and Gilmo Woods. He attended school in Midway, Texas, and served in the US Army as a staff sergeant during World War II in Europe, Russia, France and Germany. He was self-employed working in landscaping and yard work. He was a member of Ash Street Baptist Church in Abilene. John married the love of his life for 52 years, Warthia Mae Edmond, in Abilene. She preceded him in death on November 8, 2009. He was also preceded in death of his parents. John is survived by one half-brother, James Earl Nealy and wife Avella, of Houston, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. in Abilene, officiated by Rev. Danny K. Edmond. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 16, at the funeral home. Willie D. Edmond, Jimmy Edmond, Sammy DooLittle, Curtis McGilbra, Robert Dunson and Claude Nealy will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Christian Service Center, 901 Mesquite Street, Abilene, TX 79601.
