John Phillip Rogers, Sr., 79, died Thursday, August 13, 2009, at an Abilene medical center.
The son of Ruby Virginia (Payne) and Otto Lee Rogers, John was born in Pecos, Texas on February 27, 1930, and as a young child moved to Clyde where he was reared and graduated from Clyde High School. He attended Hardin-Simmons University, and served in the U. S. Navy. He retired in Abilene from Texas Instruments as an electronic technician.
On November 17, 1950, John married his "soul mate" Geneva Faye Dunlap. She preceded him in death in 1986. He married Wanda Burson in 1987.
A loving, giving man of integrity, John loved the Lord, and served as an example of our Father in Heaven, always desiring to be "found faithful." He had been a deacon and Sunday School teacher in the Baptist Church for many years. He was a member and deacon at Calvary Baptist Church.
He was a Mason and loved to play tennis. In his later years, John loved to "hang out" with friends at Monterrey Restaurant and the Wes-T-Go Truck Stop.
His first wife, Geneva Faye Dunlap Rogers; his parents; a brother, Bailey Rogers; and a sister, Bobbie Lee, preceded him in death.
John is survived by his wife, Wanda Burson Rogers of Abilene; son, John Phillip (Phil) Rogers, Jr. of Abilene; Paula Faye Rogers Stafford and husband, Rick, of Abilene; stepchildren, Larry Kimbrough of Stamford, Jerrie Sue Hise of Haskell, and Edward Feemster and Judy Drinnon both of Abilene; two grandchildren, Christina Bohannan and Tiffani Hatcher; eight step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers, O. L. Rogers of Corpus Christi, and Paul Rogers of Clyde; five sisters, Wanda Black of College Station, Texas, Betty Crawford and Nell Carter both of Abilene, JoAnn Lannom of Clyde, and Nancy Stout of Conway, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 15, in Clyde Cemetery in Clyde, Texas, with Bro. H. B. Terry, Jr. officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, Texas. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
