Col. John F. "Jack" Nuding, (Ret.) passed away peacefully, Friday, August 25, 2017. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Holy Family Catholic Church on 5410 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at The J.D. Patterson Ranch Cemetery outside of Aspermont, Texas. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
Jack was born in New York City on June 28, 1923 to parents Francis and Frieda Nuding. He spent the first years of his life home schooled in Caracas, Venezuela. From there, they moved to Long Island, New York where he attended St. Barnabas Private School and later graduated from Mempham High School. Jack then attended the University of Michigan playing for the Freshman Football Team. In the summer, he worked at Jones Beach as a lifeguard where he met soon to be lifetime friends, Bob and John Martin. The three decided to attend Ohio State University and when enrolled the outbreak of World War II propelled their decisions to enlist, rather than be drafted.
Jack was selected into the brand-new Army Air Corp where he became a Pilot and later a Bomber Pilot and instructor. Jack's assignment in Lubbock at the Army Air Base is where he met the Love of His Life, Jadine Patterson, the only child of J.D. and Vada Patterson. They were married December 12, 1945. Jack had a distinguished Military career servicing in World War II as an instructor, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He served his country for over 30 years and retired with the rank of Full Colonel. Upon retirement, Jack moved to Lubbock and then later to Abilene.
Preceded in death is his wife Jadine (Bunny), a daughter Carolyn, sister Marjorie and his parents.
Jack is survived by sons, John (Butch) and wife Linda, Doug and wife Teresa, and Frank and wife Jennifer; a niece, Nancy, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
