John Ellis Moore

1921 — October 23, 2007

John E. Moore, Jr., of Abilene, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at the age of 85. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday at Wylie Baptist Church, with Rev. Lee Fuller officiating, assisted by Rev. Oscar Fanning. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. November 16, 1921, J.E. was born to John Ellis Moore, Sr. and Carrie (Ellis) Moore in Abilene, Texas. He attended Eastern New Mexico University for two years and graduated from Texas A & M University. J.E. continued his education receiving a Masters Degree from Sam Houston State University. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. In Yuma, Arizona, J.E. married Imogene Cox on April 5, 1946. The couple lived near Brownwood, Texas where J.E. began his teaching career at Brooksmith High School, where he taught for six years. In 1956, J.E. and Imogene moved to Abilene where J.E. began teaching at Wylie High School. He taught Ag at Wylie for 33 years, before retiring in 1989. Wylie Baptist Church was a very important part of J.E.'s life. He served as a Deacon, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school for many years, and served on numerous committees at Wylie Baptist Church. He also sang in the Living Christmas Tree for 16 years. J.E. was also a longtime member of the Wylie Lions Club. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Mary B. Obenhaus and Faye Moore, his step-mother, Minnie Moore, and a son-in-law, Ray Trusler. J.E. is survived by his wife, Imogene Moore, of Abilene; one son, Keith Moore and wife B.J. of Lubbock; one daughter, Carolyn Sims and husband John, of Abilene; one brother, Jack Moore and wife JoAnne of Alvarado; two sisters, Virginia Anderson, of Abilene, and Chris Bradshaw and husband Bill, also of Abilene; four grandchildren, Carrie Trusler Harms, Jamie Trusler, Kelly Moore and Keegan Moore; three step-grandchildren, Joe Sims, Kris Rives, and Melinda Amidon. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in honor of J.E. Moore to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, Texas 79601 or to the Wylie Baptist Church Building Fund, 6097 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas 79606.
