John Walton Long passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014.
John was a longtime resident of the community, a loving husband and father, and a friend to many. John was born in Abilene on November 13, 1924. He grew up just outside Abilene, attending Wylie Schools. John enlisted in the Army at age 18 and served in Europe during World War II. After returning home, he married his wife of 68 years, Mary Louise Bowles. He worked for many years at Dyess Air Force Base and at Hoppe Auto Electric as an auto mechanic. No one knew more about fixing cars than John.
John served on the Wylie School Board and was a Deacon at Wylie Baptist church, where he was a longtime member. He was also a 3rd degree Mason and a member of the John Sayles Masonic Lodge.
John was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Eldred Long and his sister, Mary Harville. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Kathleen Brasfield; son Randy Long and wife Jo; granddaughters Rebecca Long and Julie Long Day and husband Joe, and sisters Elizabeth Hobbs and husband Charles and Pat Kennedy and husband Bobby, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in the Potosi Cemetery with Rev. John Fanning officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Potosi Fire Department, the Potosi Community Center, Wylie Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
