John Porter Inglis

1938 — February 24, 2017

John “Johnny” Porter Inglis passed away peacefully on Friday, 24 February 2017, after a fierce battle with Leukemia. Born on 25 July 1938 in Bristow, Oklahoma, to Mary Ann Hall and J.B. Inglis, John is survived by his sister, Ann Inglis Brinkman, her husband, John Brinkman, and her daughters, Angela McCoy and Caryn Koger. John is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dan Inglis. Held in loving memory by his wife, Cheri Mays Inglis; his daughters, Saidja Inglis and Rose Inglis Garrett along with her husband, Robert Garrett; as well as grandson Chelby Hanks and his wife Ashlea Hanks; John leaves behind friends, family, and a few untuned pianos. Though quiet and reserved, John was a fount of quick humor and a wealth of talent. John grew up in Lawton and Altus, Oklahoma, and went on to complete his education at the University of North Texas, where he was in the One O'clock lab band. After traveling the world as a musician, playing with Woody Herman, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Tommy Dorsey, also playing trumpet and occasional relief conductor for the Folies Bergère, in Las Vegas, John went on to proudly serve the Nevada Division of Forestry. Later, in Abilene, John became a postal mail carrier and owned a piano tuning business. John’s talent and passion for music lives on in his grandson, Chelby, his wit and humor is left to his daughters, Saidja and Rose, and the remote control to his wife, Cheri (who will have to learn how to use it). A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, 2 March 2017 at Lytle South Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered for the Lytle South Building Fund or the Salvation Army.
