John Hunter

1931 — December 31, 2018

John Hunter, 87, of Abilene, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 in Abilene.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the Logsdon Chapel on the Hardin Simmons University campus with Dr. Lanny Hall, Rudy Fambrough, and Dr. Tom Copeland, officiating. A reception will follow immediately after the service.   Private family interment will be in the Burkett Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

John was born on September 24, 1931 in Burkett, Texas to the late Charles and Essie (Baker) Hunter.  He and Tina were married on August 3, 1952 in Coleman, Texas.  John was a machinist by trade.  He loved building and creating new things with his hands.  He was an entrepreneur and held several different patents. He often referred to himself as a problem solver. John enjoyed fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family. However, most of all, John loved to dance.  John and Tina moved to Abilene in 1960. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

John is survived by his wife Tina of Abilene; three daughters, Carla Limbaugh and husband Troy of Tuscola; Pam Tippen and husband Philip and Jennifer Jones and husband Brand all of Abilene; two sisters, Betty Bryan of Rockwood, Texas and Ann Stutzman and husband Roger of Mansfield, Texas; seven grandchildren, Emily Callaway and husband Jeff of Tuscola; Ellena Kristin Doran and husband Will of Tuscola; William Tippen and wife Kaely of Abilene; James Peter Tippen and wife Carrie of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Hannah Jowers and husband Clay of Abilene; Hunter Jones and wife Marloes of Kansas City, Missouri; and Houston Jones of Austin, Texas; and fifteen great grandchildren.   

Family suggests memorials may be made to the John and Tina Hunter Endowed Scholarship c/o Hardin Simmons University, PO Box 16100, Abilene, Texas 79698, or a favorite charity of one’s choice.
