John D. Holton of Abilene, TX, age 76, left this earth to go to his Lord and Savior on September 12, 2013 in Abilene, Texas. Visitation will be from 2 PM until 4 PM, Sunday, September 15, 2013 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, on Monday, September 16, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, Abilene, Texas with Pastors Stan Allcorn and Jeff Reid of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Arrangements are by The Hamil Family Funeral Home. John D. Holton was born in Millen, GA to John O. and Ada Mae Holton on January 24, 1937, and went to school in Waynesboro, GA. He married Nelda McPeters on March 23, 1979 in Abilene, Texas. John served in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. He worked for Texas Department of Transportation after retiring from service and retired from there in 2000. He served in the Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Breakfast on Beech Street, Nehemiah Projects, and Texas Baptist Church Builders. John was preceded in death by John O. Holton, Ada Mae Holton, and sister Janell H. Jones. John is survived by his wife Nelda Holton; children Donna Tant, John D. Holton, Jr. and wife Des, Davey McPeters, Jr. and wife Lisa, Shana Gassiot and husband Bo; nine grandchildren Brittany Cutright and husband Chris, Jordanne Tant, Jon-Garrett Holton, Becky Cauthen and husband Bryan, Ashlee Gassiot, Brandon Gassiot, Jon-David McPeters, Summer McPeters and Autumn McPeters; six great-grandchildren; and the mother of his children, Maureen Holton, all of the Abilene area. Survivors also include two brothers Arthur Holton and wife Judy, and Ray Holton and wife Lou; a sister Faye Benham and husband Flip; and several nieces and nephews. The family of John D. Holton wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Hospice of the Big Country. Pallbearers will be Kerry Williams, Hal McCullough, Allen Lamb, Deming Harris, Bill Goldman, and Edwin Broesche Memorials may be given to The Salvation Army, 1726 Butternut, Abilene, TX 79602, or Meals on Wheels Plus, P.O. Box 903, Abilene, TX 79604.
