John Dickson Ferguson, Jr., passed away on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at his home in Abilene. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 1, 2012 in Abilene at The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest with the Reverend Luke Back and assisting clergy officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Involved in farming and ranching, John lived most of his life on the family ranch north of Hamlin. His parents were the late John Dickson Ferguson (locally known as Dickie Ferguson) and Elmo Joy (Wilson) Ferguson.
He Married Martha Minter of Abilene on October 18, 1969. They enjoyed over thirty years of living in Hamlin raising their children.
He served on the Board of Directors for Hendrick Medical Center Foundation, West Texas Rehabilitation Center and Ben Richey Boys Ranch. He was involved with several organizations in Hamlin, Abilene and Cuernavaca, Mexico.
John was a member of The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest where he served on the Vestry and was a Pastor in the Hands-On Outreach Ministry.
John is survived by his wife, Martha; his daughter, Claire Ferguson Crane of Athens, Georgia; his son, Dr. John Dickson Ferguson, III and daughter-in-law, Dr. Sarah Ferguson of Abilene; four wonderful grandchildren, his granddaughter, Hannah Ferguson Crane of Abilene, currently a freshman at University of Texas, Austin, his granddaughter, Mary Ellen (Ellie) Crane of Athens, Georgia, his granddaughter, Anna Grace Ferguson of Abilene, and his grandson, George Dickson Ferguson of Abilene; his sister, Jane Ferguson Guitar and brother-in-law Phil Guitar of Abilene; a sister-in-law, Sally Ann Minter Walls of Dallas; nephews, Phillip Guitar of Fort Worth and Justin Fourton of Dallas; nieces, Catherine Guitar of Abilene and Tiffani Fourton Cooper of Dallas; dear friend, Chester Pope, Jr., by several cousins and many friends.
