John Roy Day, Jr. passed away peacefully into the loving arms of God on December 27th, 2011 at the age of 90. John was born on November 29, 1921 in Burnet, Texas to John Roy Day, Sr. and Adah Latham.
He graduated from Coleman High School and received a Master of Education from McMurry University before entering the service during World War II. He served in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps 13th Air Force.
After his service, he returned to civilian life in Electra, Texas where he met and married a young school teacher, Sue Frances Carr in July 1947. He taught school for 33 years including teaching art when Madison Junior High opened. In addition to teaching, he had a sideline of ranching. Interests included sailing, motor boating and taking trips on motorcycles. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene.
John is survived by his wife, Sue Frances, son John R. Day III and his wife Peggy of Abilene, daughter Melissa Pulliam and her husband Mark of Plano along with grandchildren John R. Day IV of Abilene, Christina Maher of Alamogordo, NM, Meaghan Pulliam and Matthew Pulliam of Plano. He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant children.
Services will be at the Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 30. Rev. Eddie Rivera and Rev. Robert Kelley of St. Paul United Methodist will be officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral.
Memorials may be made in his honor to McMurry Fund to assist with student scholarships.
