John W. Cain, Sr., 73, of Abilene, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 10th at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Dan Connally will officiate. Burial will be at 2:00 pm in the Moran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Born in Seminole, Oklahoma on January 28, 1938, John was the son of Viola and Wiley Lester Cain. The family moved from Oklahoma to Texas in 1942. John was a graduate of Moran High School and attended Hardin Simmons University, where he received his B.S. degree in 1966. He received his M.Ed. from Texas A & M University in 1971.
John worked in the oil field in the 1950's to the 1960's and began teaching at Franklin Junior High in Abilene where he taught from 1966 to 1973. He was the principal at Merkel from 1973 to 1981. John was a production superintendent for Dunnigan Petroleum from 1981 to 1994; an oil field consultant from 1994 to 1997; a production superintendent for Magnum Hunter Resource's from 1997 to 2004, when he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anita Janelle Kirkman Cain, one son, John Wiley Cain, Jr., his brother, Leon Cain, and a granddaughter, Mallory Brooke Cain.
Survivors include his son, Leslie Scott Cain and his wife Stacy of Lubbock; one sister Doris Thornton, of Longview; six grandchildren: Christopher, Megan, Mason, Katie, Dustin and Destiny; one great-granddaughter, Emory Jade Workman and three nieces.
