Joe K. Smith

Joe K. Smith, 77, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Wisteria Place Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, October 14, 2013 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. A committal service will follow at 12:00 pm at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Joe was born July 26, 1936 in Baird, Texas to Barney Hayden Smith and Eula Dee “Pet” (Middleton) Smith. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received a purple heart. Joe married Joyce Lynn Presswood on June 21, 1957 in Abilene, Texas. She preceded him in death on May 8, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Christi Smith. Joe is survived by two sons, Sean Smith and wife Lavinda of Aspermont, and Shane Smith and wife Robin of Graham; one daughter, Lesia Crumbley and husband Byron of Salem, Alabama; one sister, Judy Woolfe and husband Kenneth of Abilene; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Dilon Duffy, Alexander Stevens, Jacob Stevens, Tobin Smith, Zachary Smith and Stephen Torrez will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made in honor of Joe Smith to the Ben Richey Boys Ranch, 501 Ben Richey Dr., Abilene, TX 79602.
