Joe K. Cubine, 75, died Thursday, January 20, 2011, in Abilene, Texas.
Born in Vernon, Texas on October 18, 1935, Joe was the son of the late Freddie Mae (Taylor) and Robert Cubine. He married Charlcye Barton on June 6, 1959 in Arlington, Texas.
Joe received a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (1959); completed courses in Advanced Reservoir Engineering at Tulsa University (1964); and completed a course in Modern Decision Methods in Petroleum Investment at the University of Oklahoma (1982).
He began his career with Cities Service Oil Company as a field roustabout (1953-59) and continued with the company (1959-1965) in various technical positions in various locations including Odessa, Texas, and Southern Oklahoma, and transferred to Bartlesville to the reservoir engineering section for assignment to Gulf Coast reservoir evaluations. He worked on reservoir studies for gas wells in Corpus Christi Bay, condensate wells in Mayfield and Frio Sand producers in the Louisiana area. From 1965-67, he was technical advisor to management of international division of Cities Service International on field operations, economic evaluations and reservoir studies, serving as technical consultant and trouble-shooter to field operations in Colombia, Argentina and Indonesia.
He was technical manager for Argentina Cities Service Development Company (1967-69), and manager of Petroleum Engineering section of Crest Engineering, Inc. (1969-71) and vice-president (1971-74), and executive vice-president for Resource Development (1974-75).
In 1975 he became an independent oil and gas producer for Encon Engineering, first as an engineering consultant, later president of Aero Perforating, Inc. and C & R Well Service, Inc, vice president of Encon Services, Inc. and Quest Petroleum, Inc. through 1983, when he became president of Encon Services, Inc., supervising drilling, completion and operation of over 300 wells in the North Texas area for more than 24 years.
His was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers AIME and a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. He was author of "Pump Directly from Oil and Gas Separators", The Oil and Gas Journal, August 31, 1970, and co-author of "Offshore Treating Facilities for Seawater Injection", Petroleum Equipment International, August, 1973, as well as instructor of courses in Abilene, including a course at Abilene Christian University in Electric Log Analysis.
In 1976, Mr. Cubine moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Abilene where he was a member of Southern Hills Church of Christ. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran.
Joe is survived by his wife, Charlcye Cubine of Abilene; three daughters, Michelle McLean and husband Mike, Cathy Taylor and husband Brad, and Sandy Cubine, all of Abilene; sister, Bobbie Hines of Abilene; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 22, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, officiated by Harold Taylor. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
