Joe L. Bennett

Joe L. Bennett, 84, of Abilene, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020 in Abilene. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday January 31, 2020 in the Staterooms at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas with Rev. Stan Allcorn, officiating. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home. Joe was born on November 15, 1935 in San Angelo to the late Joe C. and Millie (Haggard) Bennett. He and Margie “Nita” Bradley were married on November 12, 1953 in San Angelo. She preceded him in death on January 2, 1996. He served in the U.S. National Guard for 4 years. Later, Joe became the store manager for Tandy Leather on North 1st Street in Abilene for 27 years. After retiring, he built his house on Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo to enjoy one of greatest pastimes, fishing. A short time later, Tandy Leather called Joe and convinced him to move to Fort Worth to become an assistant supervisor. Joe worked another 10 years before retiring the second time. He moved back to San Angelo to live until returning to Abilene in 2015. Joe was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Abilene, a member of the Elks Lodge #1880 in San Angelo and a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church Joe is survived by his two daughters, Judy Dutton and husband Robbie of Abilene and Jan Bartlett and husband Richard of Clyde, Texas; three grandchildren, Marlie Dutton, Tamara Dill and Weston Bartlett; and three great grandchildren, Brooks Dill, Emory Bartlett and Whitten Bartlett.
