Jo Ann McKinney Brown
Jo Ann McKinney Brown was born October 4, 1928, in Como, Texas. She married Malcolm Brown in 1947. She was the daughter of Lester and Theo McKinney. After graduating from Carthage High School, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from East Texas Baptist University and a Master of Education from Hardin Simmons University. She did post-graduate work at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas; and East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. She was the first woman to receive an Education Administration Certificate from Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas. She taught speech at East Texas Baptist University, taught in the Education Department at Hardin Simmons University, and in the Roscoe and Sweetwater public schools. She served as Assistant Superintendent in the Sweetwater Independent School District until her retirement.
She is survived by Malcolm Brown of Abilene, Texas, her husband for 62 years; two sons?Dr. Anthony (Tony) Brown and Diane of Westport, Oklahoma, and David Brown and Judy of Snyder, Texas; her brother Mike McKinney of Louisville, Kentucky; and five grandchildren?Elizabeth, Cameron, Rebekah, Taylor and Michael. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. A graveside service will held at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater, Texas at 9:30 am on Wednesday June 17. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 17 at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas.
Jo Ann was an active member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the "Primetimers of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church", 701 South Pioneer Drive, Abilene, Texas 79605.
