Jimmy Dean (J.D.) Womack went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 12, 2015. He was born in Cross Cut, Texas on July 5, 1925, to Jesse and Willie Payne Womack.
Jimmy married the love of his life and best friend, Barbara Smith Womack, on December 17, 1955. They enjoyed 59 wonderful years together. God blessed them with one son, Jeffery Dean Womack. Jimmy was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always leading his family by the strong Christian life he lived out each day.
Jimmy proudly served his country for over 20 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 1942 - Jan. 1946. He then joined the Army as a cartographer doing map compiling and map drafting. He served in World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed in San Francisco, CA; Heidelberg, Germany; Ft. Bragg, NC; and Washington, D.C. where he retired in 1966 from the Defense Communication Agency. Upon returning to Abilene, J.D. worked for WTU as a draftsman from 1966-1990 when he retired.
J.D. was an active member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church for 24 years where he served as a deacon and faithful choir member. Being in the Easter Pageant each year brought much joy to his heart. J.D. and Barbara devoted many years to working with the college students at PDBC as well. He was a member of the Intergeneration Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Gideons International and enjoyed handing out God’s Word for many years.
J.D.’s hobbies included playing softball, bowling, and reading. He enjoyed his time in a bowling league while stationed in Washington, D.C. and loved playing in the church softball league for many years. His love of reading was his greatest joy after retirement. His favorite author was Zane Grey, with Louis L’Amour coming in a close second. It was a rare occasion to see him without a book in his hands.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lynette Starks; and his brother, Harold Womack.
Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara; his devoted son, Jeff; his special extended family: Henry, Nancy, David, John, and Emily Bloodworth; and his niece, Sharon Alford.
Pallbearers will be Jay Barbian, Chad Mitchell, Mark Hudson, Russell McKeever, Paul Draper, and Alan Jones.
