J. R. Swim, 73, of Abilene, passed away with his wife by his side on Thursday, January 17, 2019.
Viewing will be from 3pm – 5pm on Sunday, January 20, 2019 and funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 21, 2019 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Archie Echols will officiate. A private interment will follow at a later date.
J. R. was born on November 30, 1945 in Matador, Texas and raised in Roaring Springs, Texas. He married Stella Martin, of Matador, Texas, on June 6, 1965. J. R. served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969 before completing his degree in pharmacy at the University of Texas in 1973. He moved to Abilene in 1977 and worked for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, ran his own business as a pharmaceutical consultant and served as the director of the pharmacy at Sears Methodist Center before working at the North Texas State Hospital in Vernon. J. R. later worked as director of pharmacy at the Abilene State School before retiring in 2007. He enjoyed research on new advances in generic prescription drugs and genealogy, a hobby that led him to compile extensive data on family connections extending centuries into the past.
J. R. is survived by his wife, Stella of Abilene; his brother Sam Swim of Lubbock, Texas; his son Edward Swim and wife Kimberly of Willis, Texas; his daughter Emily Redding and husband Gregory of Las Vegas, Nevada; and five grandchildren. He was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.
J. R. was preceded in death by his mother, Imogene (Hastings) Swim and his father, Jesse T. Swim, Jr.
