Jerry Smith, 49, of Abilene, died Sunday, January 11, 2009 at a local hospital. A private memorial service was held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the family home. Arrangements were handled by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. April 13, 1959, Jerry was born in Portageville, Missouri to Jim Ed Smith and Lois Lena Benthal Smith. He served as Chief Master Sergeant for the United States Air Force. While at Dyess Air Force Base, Jerry served with the 7th Medical Group. He retired from Dyess in 2006. Jerry married Gwendolyn Ruth Leary on April 21, 1977 in Portageville, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jerry is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn Smith, of Abilene; one son, Jerry Dewayne Smith, II, of Abilene; one daughter, Samantha Smith, also of Abilene; two brothers, Jimmie Smith, of San Antonio and John Cameron Smith, of Linn Creek Missouri; two sisters, Dana Wilcox, of Lennox Hills, Tennessee, Donna Frazier, of Halls, Tennessee; one grandson, Braedon Smith and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Hendrick Medical Center for their care and support and would like to suggest memorials be made to Hendrick Medical Center in his memory.
