Janice Harkins

1930 — January 27, 2018

Janice Harkins, 87, of Abilene, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 2, 2018 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.  Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.  Rev. Bill Libby will officiate.  There will be a viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 1st at the funeral home.

Janice was born June 29, 1930 in Abilene, Texas to Charlie and Cola B. (Ramsey) Atkinson.  She graduated from Abilene High School in 1947 and from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas in 1950.  She married William F. “Bill” Harkins on August 22, 1950 in Abilene.  He preceded her in death February 13, 2014.

Janice taught elementary school in the Denton Independent School District for 20 years. In 1988 she moved from Denton, Texas to Abilene, where she was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  She was an avid volunteer for the Grace Museum, Hendrick Medical Center and the Medical Care Mission.  Janice was also an avid reader and Bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Charles R. Atkinson.

Janice is survived by three sons, Rick Harkins of Ashville, NC, Randy Harkins and wife Janna of New Braunfels, TX, and Rob Harkins of Abilene; daughter, Holly Caley of Denton; her sister, Norma LaBarth of Abilene; and six grandchildren, Aaron Harkins, John Harkins, Bryan Harkins, Marissa Sandoval, Courtney Arrant and Clayton Caley; a great-grandson, Cannon Arrant; three great-granddaughters, Rilynn Caley, Ellie Sandoval and Madeline Harkins; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
