In Loving Memory of Jan Long
Jan Long of Abilene, Texas, passed away on Friday, December 8, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at age 66. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at Beltway Park South Campus in the Sanctuary with Cody Cochran of Bethel Assembly of God, officiating. Services are under the direction of the The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd Abilene, Texas 79606.
Jan was born to Kenneth and June McWhorter on June 26, 1957, in Olney, Texas. She graduated from Archer City High School in 1975 and earned a Bachelor's degree from McMurry University. On March 11, 1978, she married the love of her life, Ralph (Jigger) Long, in Archer City, Texas.
Jan dedicated 35 years of her life as a teacher in the Abilene Independent School District. She was not only a passionate educator but also an active member of the community, participating in organizations such as the Abilene Junior League, Cattle Barron's Ball, and the Western Heritage Classic. Her volunteer work extended to countless other events, where she made a positive impact on those around her.
Raised in Archer City, Texas, with a love for horses, Jan met Jigger at a rodeo, and they later settled in Abilene, Texas. Together, they raised two beautiful children. Upon retirement, Jan found joy in working at trade shows, embracing life to the fullest, and cherishing every moment.
Jan was a vibrant soul who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She had a zest for life that was contagious, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Her sense of humor, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be dearly missed.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and June McWhorter, and her brothers Jerry and Joe McWhorter. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph (Jigger) Long, her children Erin and her husband Martin Richter, Taylor and his wife Traci Long, her sisters Ginger Hilton and Kandy McWhorter, her brother Jay McWhorter, and her grandchildren McClain Richter and Scotti and Sterling Long.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider donating to the American Heart Association or a charity of your preference in Jan's memory. The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks to all who have offered support during this difficult time. May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved her.
