Jamie was born to John Edwin and Ora Mae Simmons Scott in Denton Valley on April 8, 1924. Jamie attended Denton Valley schools and graduated from high school in 1941. She married Hicks Adeil Turner on February 7, 1942, and they shared a year together before Hicks was sent overseas in World War II. During the three years Hicks was abroad, she worked for Southern Pacific Railway in California and Shell Oil Company in South Texas.
After the war, Jamie and Hicks lived in South Texas for ten years. During that time, she worked for the US Post Office and owned a dress boutique. They then moved to Venezuela with Magnolia Oil and resided there for three years. They returned to Texas, and Jamie worked at D. Ansley Company in San Antonio while Hicks attended university. In 1966, there came a new opportunity from Mobil Oil to work and live in Tripoli, Libya. Always up for an adventure and travel, they relocated and lived there until 1974. During the course of her husband’s career, Jamie also lived in Lagos, Nigeria and Medan, Indonesia before returning to Dallas, Texas in 1978. Jamie experienced an evacuation to Italy in 1967 during the 6-Day War and Gaddafi's military coup in 1969, and of course many exciting European vacations. Hicks and Jamie retired in 1981, and moved back to Callahan County to a home they built on her family land. Hicks passed away in 1994 after 52 years of marriage.
Jamie was a member of First United Methodist Church of Abilene and a valued member of the Harvesters Sunday School Class. In recent years, she often attended Eula United Methodist Church. She belonged to Order of the Eastern Star, and served as president of Mobil Oil Wives Club. She was an honored member of the Callahan County Historical Society and assisted Hicks in producing I Remember Callahan in 1985. She was an avid bridge and tennis player, and was always up for a competitive game of Chinese checkers. She loved to dress up, host a party and take trips, anywhere and everywhere. She had many wonderful friends and adored her family, loving each of them unconditionally.
Jamie was preceded in death by her husband, Hicks Adeil Turner; an infant son, Robert Scott Turner; sisters Ruby Grantham and Rebecca Cody; and brothers Herman Scott, Dale Scott, and J.E. “Jake” Scott.
She is survived by her daughter, Dana Turner Akins, of Abilene; her son, John Carl Turner and his wife, Kathleen of The Woodlands; her daughter Nancy Turner Galle and her husband, Brian of Eula; sister, Sue Blair of Eula; eight grandchildren, eleven great children, and one great-great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special friend and companion, Clem Reid of Lawn.
