James L. R. Hines, 85, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2006 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Hines was born on March 20, 1921 in Vernon, Texas to W.L. and Bertha Mae "Fowler" Hines. He graduated from Harold High School in Harold, Texas. On March 17, 1942, he married Bobbie Cubine in Frederick, Oklahoma. He was a WWII Veteran, serving from 1942 to 1944 as a Tech Sergeant in the Army. He attended the University of Houston and graduated in 1949. After graduation, Mr. Hines worked for Shell Oil Company as a safety engineer. In 1960, he moved from Wichita Falls to Abilene. He owned and operated Shady Oaks Nursing Home for a period of time. He later owned and operated James L.R. Hines Oil Co.
Mr. Hines was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Mason. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the great outdoors, but his greatest joy was raising his three grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his brother, A.L. Hines and both of his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Hines of Abilene; his daughter, Pamalee Hines Wellhausen of Abilene; three grandchildren, Chad Wellhausen and wife, Jennifer of Madison, Mississippi, Kyle Wellhausen of Abilene, and Clint Wellhausen of Wickenburg, Arizona; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful dog Houston.
Pallbearers will be Chad Wellhausen, Kyle Wellhausen, Clint Wellhausen, Nathan Stedham, Mike Hines and Gregg Hines.
