James Horace “Jim” Chittum, 91, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 in Big Spring, Texas.
Funeral services will be 11:30 am Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with his nephew, A.G. Robertson, Jr., officiating. Interment will follow with military honors in the Texas State Veterans at Abilene. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas.
Jim was born on February 12, 1927 in Hawley, Texas to the late William and Vera (Culpepper) Chittum. At the age of 14, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines. After serving his country, he and Dorothy Louise Jones were married on July 2, 1949 in Abilene. She preceded him in death on April 14, 2009. Jim began working in the service station business at N 8th and Grape. He owned and operated the Exxon and Shell Service Stations in Abilene. Later, Jim worked as an oil field contractor. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a resident of the Ft. Phantom Lake area for 40 years.
Jim was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
Survivors include, two sons, Michael Chittum and wife Kindra and Gregory Chittum and close friend Casandra Staacke; and one brother, George Chittum.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to a charity of one’s choice.
Those serving as pallbearers will be, Tommy Guy, Larry Guy, Glen Altman, Luke Davis, John Arnold, and Darin Wilson.
