J.M. Brooks, age 96, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 in Abilene. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2008 at Elmwood Memorial Park in the Garden of Peace. Rev. Rodney Watson will officiate. The family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
James was born November 9, 1912 in Pulaski County, Arkansas to James Moses and Anna Creason Brooks. He moved to Taylor County, Texas in March of 1929. James married Mary Luellen Thompson in 1935. He worked to help build Camp Barkley in the early days of World War II. He also worked for B. F. Horn Construction Company and for the City of Abilene in the Water Department before retiring in 1978.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Luellen, in 1987 and seven brothers and sisters. He married Virginia Hackney in Abilene on April 29, 1988. He was a member of Lytle South Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Brooks, of Abilene; one son James Earl Brooks and his wife Janet of Abilene; one granddaughter, Sherry Butler and her husband David, also of Abilene; one grandson, Randy Brooks and his wife Susan, of San Angelo; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucy Calloway, of McKinney, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
