James Price Brock, Jr., M.D. James Price Brock, Jr., M.D. died peacefully on July 21, 2017, at the age of 76 in Abilene, Texas. He was surrounded by his family and in the care of Hendrick Hospice. Dr. Brock was born August 20, 1940, in McComb, MS, to the Reverend James Price Brock and Normal Jane Schilling Brock. A 1958 honor graduate of Holmes Agricultural High School, he lettered in Band, Choir, Football, Basketball, baseball and was selected to the All-State Band. He earned a BS in Chemistry/Biology from Mississippi College in 1966 and graduated Cum Laude. He received his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he then completed a Rotating Surgical Internship at Ben Taub General Hospital. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves began from1962 until he went on Active Duty, as a member of the Fleet Marine Force Pacific from 1967-1969. During training at Camp Pendleton, he attended Field Medical Service and Amphibious Warfare Schools in preparation for his 1968-69 tour in Vietnam. As a proud Marine, he served as Battalion Surgeon, 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment; Regimental Surgeon, 5th Marine Regiment. His service to wounded Marines during the 1968 Tet Offensive in Hue City was an indelible memory. He was recognized with numerous Military Decorations for his distinctive service, commitment, skill and expertise. On his return from Vietnam, Dr. Brock completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Baylor Affiliated hospitals from 1969-73, during which time he served as Team Physician for the Houston Oilers. In July of 1973, he joined Orthopaedic Associates of Abilene. Price was passionate about the ability to help others, was involved in medical mission work and also took a special interest in student athletes. In 1974, he enthusiastically introduced the principles and concept of "sports medicine" to the Abilene schools along with the three colleges and schools in the surrounding areas. That same year he initiated scoliosis screening in AISD, Sweetwater and surrounding communities, working closely with school nurses for whom he had such respect. He served as Team Physician for Abilene High School from 1974-2006, and Cooper High School from 1987-2002. There are few things he loved as much as being on the sidelines at Shotwell Stadium. A Diplomate of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he was also a member of the Taylor Jones Haskell Medical Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Association, Texas Medical Association, Texas Medical Sports Medicine Committee, Charter Member of the Texas Association of Team Physicians. Dr. Brock also served as a charter member of the Board of Hendrick Medical Center Foundation, was the chair of numerous hospital and medical committees and was the Chief of Medical Staff of Hendrick Medical Center from 1990-91. Price had a deep commitment to civic and religious duties. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church and through the years acted as Sunday School teacher, member of the choir and Deacon. He was on the Abilene Military Affairs Committee, Friends of the Abilene Public Library and a member of Kiwanis of Abilene. A quiet and humble man, Price was an incredible husband, loving father and generous friend. He loved his dogs and spending time outdoors; hunting and fishing with friends, travel with his wife and family, reading a great book by himself or listening to good music. He was patient beyond all measure and the legacy he leaves is one of kindness and strength. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Price is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Lee Calhoun, his son Bryan and wife Katina, of Nashville, TN, daughter Rachel and fiance, Ben Robinson, of Lago Vista, TX, bonus daughter Lori Conklin, M.D. and granddaughter Isabella Conklin, of Charlottesville, VA. In addition, he is survived by his sister Jane Brock Weatherly and her husband Ted, and sister-in-law Suzanne Boone and husband Bill; Nephews Doug Boone and wife Crisler, Stewart Boone and wife Elizabeth, James Weatherly and wife Liz; nieces Elizabeth Boone Bowen and husband Kip; great nieces and nephews Will, Sam, Jonathan and Thomas Boone, Ben Bowen, Emma and Nicholas Briceno, Claire and Rose Weatherly. Visitation will be from 5-7pm, Monday, July 24, in the Welcome Center of First Baptist Church, 1333 N. 3rd St. Funeral services will be held at 11am, Tuesday, July 25, in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary with Dr. Phil Christopher officiating. A private family burial will be observed on Tuesday morning. Arrangements are by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Memorials may be made to the Price and Nancy Brock Fund at the Community Foundation of Abilene, the Music Ministry at First Baptist Church, Rescue the Animals or any non-profit organization of your choosing.
