J.T. "Jack" Menefee saw almost a century of change before he went home to meet the Lord on July 6, 2007. Graveside services will be at the Potosi Cemetery on Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Dora Eggleston Menefee Dorsey.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Berneice; his daughter, Kay Billings and her husband, Randy of Abilene; a son, Mark Menefee and his wife Kelley of Cedar Park, Texas; four grandchildren, Matt Menefee, Tiffany Jacobs and her husband, Jonathan Jacobs, Dean Liesman all of Cedar Park, Texas, and Christine Meservy and her husband, James Meservy, and one great grandchild, Madison Meservy of Killeen, Texas. Jack was survived by a special sister in law and loving care giver, Dorothy Mitchell and several nieces and nephews.
Jack's gruff exterior hid a heart of gold. He was a good man who was always there for his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He was the rock everyone in the family counted on. Jack lived through the great depression which instilled in him a strength of character and integrity that always saw him and the family through any difficulties. He held himself to high standards and was of the old time code where a man's word was his bond. Jack was a living history book recounting stories of his youth. Telling of times we can only imagine; plowing a field with a mule all day for a dollar and a meal during the depression, running the first and only red light in San Antonio because he had never seen one before, working with the WPA on the Galveston seawall, and seeing the installation of electric lights and indoor plumbing. Jack spent 38 years working for Southwestern Bell to provide his family a good living and along with his wife, Berneice, put both kids through college. Words can't sum up the effect he had on his family and others. Above all he will be missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.
The family asked that in lieu of flowers you may send memorial donations to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford Street, Abilene, Texas or Elmdale Baptist Church, Route 2, Abilene, Texas 79602.
